In every distillery the handling of highly flammable liquids is the core process and it is crucial to ensure that the buildings are designed in accordance with all relevant codes. The high Mill tower of the grain distillery had to be designed to provide safe means of escape in a reasonable scale for an area that is only occasionally occupied. The bottling hall is a place with diverse uses as it houses a production area, warehouse / dispatch office spaces and staff facilities. It was important to design the fire safety suitable for the relevant areas and to provide separation where necessary
The use of sprinkler systems connected to the main system provided on site in the relevant areas of the building in line with appropriate separation of non sprinklered areas and the use of advanced fire separation methods helped to keep the building costs within the limits. A combination of protected escape routes and external means of escape where appropriate was used to provide sufficient means of escape even in challenging workspaces like the mill tower. It was ensured that all relevant areas in the building are fully accessible suitable for the users in the relevant areas and appropriate solutions were found by working closely with the local authorities.
Tullamore Distillery are still making the second best-selling Irish whiskey and thanks to the new facilities new variations can be developed and the supply can meet the demand.
