Clondalkin Round Tower visitors centre is accommodated in an ensemble of historic terraced houses which form part of a protected structure and a new extension and it was proposed to provide a visitor centre with exhibition space displaying the history of the round tower and the houses open to the public together with a café and public amenities. With a protected building open to the public, it is important to find the balance between preserving the original building and to provide an accessible space that can be used safely.
To create an accessible protected building communication was important with Local Authority and the architects. This is to ensure that the necessary provisions for access and use and for fire safety do not impact on the proposed use. New stairs and various new innovative technology had to added while the existing provisions have been reasonable improved to create an accessible and save visitor centre while keeping the intrusion into the original structure low.
Clondalkin Round Tower is now a modern accessible and safe building that has fully accessible café and exhibition spaces without compromising of the fire safety. The visitor museum shows the history of the local area and also allows the public to come in for a quiet cup of coffee in the café.
